"Tuplejo"

Trio exploring the frontiers of the 'Third Stream'

Personnel
Leo McFadden: Nylon String Guitar
Jonathan Dimond: Electric Bass and Tabla
Tupac Mantilla: Percussion and Drumset

Vision of the Ensemble
Tuplejo is an ensemble that draws from a large variety of musical genres including Jazz, contemporary, north and south Indian classical, popular, rock, western classical, and various folk music traditions (for example, the music of Columbia). The group has a specific focus on original composition that unites improvisation with preconceived material - creating ‘Third Stream’ music.

Being a careful synthesis between structured composition and improvisation, the group’s criteria for choosing performance repertoire is very specific: We are looking for material which is either original or can be arranged to show our unique individual and collective musical personalities. All three members are also composers.

The unique instrumentation featured in Tuplejo is one that does not automatically reference a certain genre of music (e.g. Double Bass, Piano, Drumset suggests a jazz piano trio). Subsequently, the band is highly adaptable to the diverse range of music that its repertoire covers. The band gains further versatility through bassist Dimond’s ability to switch between electric bass (both fretted and fretless) and tabla, which effectively gives the band a percussion section that, when combined with the solo/classical style guitar skills of Leo McFadden, yields some very interesting results. Tupac Matilla is also fluent on both percussion and drumset, and has a special gift for bringing musical life to any found object - be it tin cans, tables, or the human body itself!
